With the Royal Wedding of the Duke and 
Duchess of Cambridge (or Kate and William to you and I) a little way behind us, one could have been forgiven for feeling slightly deflated after all the excitement. However, I ’take my hat off’ (if you’ll excuse the pun) to the gentile way in which Samantha Cameron, and Princess Beatrice weathered the ‘conversation’ over their headwear at the wedding. (Samantha Cameron was criticised for not wearing enough headwear – and Princess Beatrice was criticised for wearing too much!)
Samantha Cameron maintaining a dignified silence, perhaps confident in the fact that by wearing the Erdem hair-clip she was endorsing her position as Ambassador for the British Fashion Council and showing her allegiance to one of this Country’s brightest stars. Anyone in the know would have ‘got it’.
Princess Beatrice decided to auction her hat on eBay for Unicef and Children in Crisis, and the bidding closed last night at a staggering £81,100.01.
There should be a new rule for these occasions – ‘Never let beautiful young women with great skin be seen in ageing headwear’ -whatever the occasion! Now as we get a little older – an expertly placed pillbox, with or without a veil, can be one’s biggest friend….(a la T.P.T. and Victoria Beckham – who both looked amazing!)
Also, let’s not forget how beautiful Kate looked. When it comes to fashion icon’s - sorry - only Kate will do. (Somewhere I just heard Pippa Middleton breathe a huge sigh of relief). Even Pippa must be getting bored of seeing her own posterior in the newspapers every day by now, however toned, and no, we don’t want to know the address of her pilates instructor!
And now, with the wedding of Zara Phillips and Mike Tindall (another thoroughly modern couple) purportedly taking place later in the year, we can start to get excited and ‘think weddings’ all over again. I wonder what or who Zara will be wearing? She seems very independent and it will be interesting to see who she chooses…
