ABOUT VERENA MICHELS

 

Verena Michels (1988) lives and works in Berlin. Previously, she studied at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy, Amsterdam Fashion Institute in Amsterdam. Her work ranging from clothing, objects, installations, material comes from experimental studies in which materiality is inextricably linked with the design. Represents the pure material for Verena Michels an arena where the challenge especially its limits is entered.

During Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Amsterdam Verena Michels Sunday presented a collection that is part of its multidisciplinary project “Trümmerfrau”, literally translated as “debris over star.” Inspired by the aesthetics of residual materials Michels’ collection characterized by handmade woolen fabrics and loose collection of material. This results in very fine garments designed with an industrial rawness and a delicate fringe of poor chic.

 By careful design process, the materials are easily matched with jogging trousers army tent material, draped T-shirts, carpet bags and rope sleevesthat the charm of the limitations of the material used to visualize. The collection encourages the public to assist consumer still and to propose emancipated consumers. Verena Michels (1988) lives and works in Berlin. Previously, she studied at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy, Amsterdam Fashion Institute in Amsterdam.Her work, ranging from clothes, objects, art installations to performances (a collaboration with her regular sound designer / music director Tamara van der Laarse), comes from experimental studies of materials where the materiality is inextricably linked with the design. The symbiosis between art, fashion and design is Michels’ signature. Part of her Trümmerfrau project was last September when Gesammtkunstwerk exhibited during the exhibition “Wunderkammer” at Museum Katharinenhof Kranenborg.

Trümmerfrauen: women in Germany after World War II were responsible for their own lives on hold again and rebuild ruined cities. They developed a do-it-yourself culture, which was made garments of all remaining materials, for example navy linen and army uniforms.

Tijdens de Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Amsterdam presenteerde Verena Michels zondag een collectie die deel uit maakt van haar multidisciplinaire project “Trümmerfrau”, letterlijk vertaald als “puinruimster“. Geïnspireerd door de esthetiek van restmaterialen is Michels’ collectie gekenmerkt door handgemaakte stoffen van wol en losse stukken collectiemateriaal. Dit resulteert in zeer verfijnd ontworpen kledingstukken, met een industriële rauwheid en een delicaat randje van poor chic.

Door het zorgvuldige ontwerp-verwerkingsproces, zijn de materialen moeiteloos gematched met joggingbroeken van legertent materiaal, gedrapeerde T-shirts, carpetbags en rope sleevesdie de charme van de limitaties van het gebruikte materiaal visualiseren. De collectie moedigt het publiek aan stil te staan bij consumptie en zich een proactieve samenleving voor te stellen met geëmancipeerde consumenten.

Verena Michels (1988) woont en werkt in Berlijn. Eerder studeerde zij aan de Gerrit Rietveld Academie en Amsterdam Fashion Institute in Amsterdam. Haar werk, variërend van kleding, objecten, installatiekunst tot performances (een samenwerking met haar vaste sound designer/muziek regisseur Tamara van der Laarse), komt voort uit experimentele materiaalstudies, waarbij de materialiteit onlosmakelijk verbonden is met het ontwerp. De symbiose tussen kunst, mode en design vormt Michels’ signatuur. Een deel van haar Trummerfrau-project werd vorig jaar september tentoongesteld als gesammtkunstwerk tijdens de expo “Wunderkammer” in Museum Katharinenhof Kranenborg.

Trümmerfrauen: de vrouwen in Duitsland die na de Tweede Wereldoorlog verantwoordelijk waren om hun eigen leven weer op pakken en de wederopbouw van geruineerde steden. Ze ontwikkelden een do-it-yourself cultuur, waarbij er kleding gemaakt werd van allerlei overgebleven materialen, van bijvoorbeeld marine beddengoed en legeruniformen.
