Matthew Williamson

AUTUMN/WINTER 2014
An attitude of optimism and high-glamour is reimagined for Autumn/Winter 2014. Matthew Williamson’s woman is empowered and composed, exuding a playful and exuberant spirit.
Elongated shapes with subtly-raised waistlines in outerwear and tailored A-line skirt suits create a defined and constructed silhouette. This is contrasted with feminine shapes in silk, slinky jersey and chiffon for day and eveningwear.
The optimistic mood of the collection is captured in the star motif, reinterpreted through embroidery, fabric and print. Textural play is created through fabrics in lurex, chainmail and velvets, layered with patterned jacquards and mohair. Stars are playfully arranged into geometric polka dots, or contrasted with a bold graphic print, inspired by a Georgian rug; eluding to interiors of the 70s jet-set.
Embellishment, inspired by antique jewellery, is interpreted through sculptural crystal embroidery and threadwork stars which are worked into lace. Synthetic and organic materials are juxtaposed: laser-cut holographic perspex are embroidered on natural fabrics, and chainmail is appliqued on diaphanous organza.
A palette of Jonquil yellow and deep red is contrasted with gem-like hues of amethyst and pacific opal blue, off-set with graphic monochrome and metallics.
Accessories in the collection echo the playful spirit. Chainmail neckerchiefs adorn necklines whilst glitter belts complement and finish the looks. Matthew Williamson follows the launch of his leather bag collection last season with the addition of new styles. Leather bags feature bold star prints while fur-pillow clutches are embroidered and mini moon-shaped yellow and black bags are trimmed in goat-printed leather. Graphic boots in black and yellow add glamour to the looks, coordinated with holographic belts and textured scarves.
