What a very strange and unsettling day it has been today. 

Super Saturday was the day in which polite debate was to be held in Westminster about Boris Johnson’s deal with the EU, and then a ‘Meaningful Vote’.

Instead of which, Sir Oliver Letvin tabled an amendment which ‘put a spanner in the works’ for Boris and would force the Government to request an extension to the EU after the 31st October.

BORIS JOHNSON MAKES A STATEMENT ON ‘SUPER SATURDAY’

The ‘Letvin Amendment’ passed unfortunately which meant that Boris’s meaningful vote which everybody had bent over backwards to obtain – would not now take place. 

With regard to the debate itself, it started off looking very good for Boris, with many looking as though they would back his deal, and then the ‘Letvin Bombshell’ was dropped. After that, it was more of the same type of excitable debate as usual, with the sharp, pained faces of the Government opposition – seemingly seething over Boris’s success with his deal (and still managing to maintain top relations with the EU.)  

Outside, many thousands of remain protesters had gathered in Westminster.  When interviewed, not many had much sympathy for the leave voters, with one lady intimating that democracy is a fluid process and results for elections should be as frequent and liberal as the results of a football match!

FORMER GOVERNOR OF THE BANK OF ENGLAND LORD MERVYN KING DISCUSSES THE DEAL STRUCK BY BORIS JOHNSON AND THE EU SAYING “I THINK MOST PEOPLE PROBABLY FEEL THAT THIS HAS GONE ON FOR FAR TOO LONG AND JUST HAVE THE VIEW “JUST DO IT.”

GOVERNOR OF THE BANK OF ENGLAND MARK CARNEY HAS WELCOMED THE DEAL STRUCK WITH THE EU BY BRITISH PM BORIS JOHNSON THIS WEEK AND SAYS THAT “IF ADOPTED, IT COULD LEAD TO A PICK-UP IN ECONOMIC GROWTH.”

The fundamental problem is that most leaders in the Commons and Lords do not seem to be on the same page when it comes to the basic rule of democracy.  Maybe before we go any further – all of the leaders should get around a table, and discuss at least what they perceive constitutes a valid and effective electoral vote.

Because it looks as though rules are simply being made up as we go along.  As with the Benn Act…!

It is a very sad day, when the British Prime Minister who has all the goodwill in the World from the EU,

the Brexit voters, and has negotiated a good deal (apart from the sticking point of the Irish backstop) -  is now forced into making a decision which could hypothetically make him into a criminal.

If it were a two/four week delay just to make sure the legislation was up to scratch and all the i’s were dotted and t’s were crossed – perhaps it wouldn’t be so bad.

Doesn’t that take the sting out of this whole thing? No need for any more finger-wagging, or harmful precedent-setting second referendums.

No need for people to dig their heels in – to stand out in their minority veto of this perfectly good deal – just because they can.

No need for any more arguments, or new parties exploiting people’s insecurities about Brexit, cultivating them into personal power.

And no need for daily backwards-and-forwardsing to Brussels –

because a ‘fair and reasonable’ agreement (the EU’s words) has already been agreed.

So for those who have been arguing for a second referendum, there is no argument any more. After we have left the EU, if we wish to re-join, we can, any time we like.

The disappointment in the eyes of some of the Government’s opposition at the moment is tangible in fact, as there is nothing specific to be found in Boris Johnson and the EU’s agreement which can be ‘pin-pointed’ as disappointing. Nobody has actually stated anything particularly specific.

Instead, it seems that the ‘usual culprits’ and this time, some of those ‘not so usual’ will choose not to support it – just because they cannot or will not get out of their respective corner’s.

This has certainly been an eye-opener as to what can be achieved, however, when people put their minds to it. (On the same team – and opposing teams.)

The EU have stated that they are sad that we are leaving but ‘respect’ the decision. (Meaning our electoral vote.)

They have turned out to be truly admirable friends with whom we would hope to stay closely aligned.

We must now move forward and ‘put this to bed.’ Then we will be able to breathe a sigh of relief and know that after all of this unpleasantness over the past three years, the vote of the electorate will actually be respected and acted upon, and everybody can now ‘do the right thing’ for the Country and vote for this agreement. Otherwise the alternative could be disillusionment, frustration, and a slow, tarnishing and complacent lack of respect for democracy.

It doesn’t seem to be in anyone’s interest to step out of their own shoes and into someone else’s – but that is what needs to happen. For the sake of the Country.

Also, we need to decide what kind of a ‘democracy’ we wish to be going forward. Or if we are even able to carry on being one at all after all of this.

From my understanding, the word democracy involves actually completely factoring in the voice of the electorate to Parliamentary decisions – however unpopular those decisions may be.

If that is not the case – I wish someone could explain what we are to have instead? Because it looks as though everyone in the ‘Westminster bubble’ is burying their heads in the sand and pretending we did not vote on the referendum. They are in denial. And the louder and harder they try to convince themselves and everyone else that it is “their way or the highway”, the more the Country enters a dark and dangerous road of no return.

Are we seriously considering now that Parliament steers everyone into remaining in the European Union regardless of the voice of the electorate? Because that is what it looks like they are planning to do.

In this case, we will have to seriously reconsider the very fabric of our Politics.

Could Parliament exist without the electorate? Don’t we pay their wages?

Boris said a law has just been passed that would force him to beg Brussels for an extension to the Brexit deadline. And said “This is something I will never do”.
And who can blame him?  Especially taking into consideration that any delay would cost £1 billion per month!

Boris is simply trying to do what we asked him to do – like any other election or vote.

Maybe it is the word ‘referendum’ which is confusing to people. Maybe that is why Ministers are not taking the electorate seriously – or think that they know better than the British Public.

In this case, all of those who are insistent on having a second referendum should be glad for the opportunity of a second ‘vote/election’ – call it what you will.

Because it is clear that Westminster is split down the middle between remain and leave. And many, many Ministers interviewed this week on the TV (on all stations) have intimated that saying “we need a deal” actually translates into “we must remain in the EU”. With statements like “For some people we could sit another thousand days and still not get a deal because they don’t want to leave.” (When discussing a potential extension.)

Another Minister said “People who are saying no to no deal – are actually saying no to Brexit.”

And Lord Bridges said “There is no chance of compromise. Parliament is broken – an election is the only way.”

And an election is the only way before the 31st October preferably. Those who do not want one are obviously procrastinating because they think they might lose. One Minister interviewed this week – when asked why she didn’t want one – jokingly said “we want to have one when we know we are going to win.” But afterwards went into a long drawn out explanation.

You must all understand that the British Public should not and will not be ignored.

An election is the only way forward – surely?

Let’s get this whole thing back on track.  Ideology and wishful thinking have taken over from recognising what actually needs to be done here – and that is to fulfill the will of the British People….!

A HISTORIC TIME FOR GREAT BRITAIN – THE QUEEN HAS CONSENTED TO PROROGUE PARLIAMENT FOR FIVE WEEKS

With more shenanigans going on in Westminster than you can possibly imagine, Boris Johnson has had no alternative but to ask the Queen to prorogue Parliament because of a total lack of respect for the mandate given by the British people when they voted to leave the European Union in 2016; i.e. the rule of law.

Politicians have tried every trick in the book to thwart the will of the people at every single opportunity. Forming totally new (and ultimately and quite predictably unsuccessful) parties, beleaguered each other with often quite un-parliamentary language, “dressing up” their activities as caring for the Country, when little attempt to find common ground has been attempted, with frankly, only purely subversion of the electorate in mind.

Phrases such as “go back to the British people and let them decide”, “go back and check with the people”, and “a people’s vote”, have been bandied around almost as sensible ideas by party leaders and journo’s alike, and may have almost convinced some into forgetting about the rules of democracy and thinking that it is possible to vote again and again until you get the desired result. As we all know, this is not the case.

The lack of flexibility by all parties (including the EU) has left Boris Johnson with no choice but to take this course of action and pursue a no deal option. Otherwise, the divisions in Westminster and across the Country will continue to permeate through our very souls.

A second vote will never happen. It cannot possibly if we are to preserve our democracy. We have voted to leave. And unless that vote is respected – it is doubtful that anyone will ever turn out to vote again for an election.  Many people who voted leave have said that they would not vote again in a second referendum if the first vote was not respected (all across the Country) – so that indicates that a second referendum vote could be serviced mostly by remainers. And when the results of the vote are announced and people deny the legitimacy of the vote saying “well I didn’t vote this time” – where would we go from there?  More wrangling and debate for years and years.  Then what, another referendum, and then another?

Nobody wanted a no-deal Brexit – including Boris Johnson. But when nobody is co-operating, and there is a lack of flexibility (and respect) on all parts, resulting in total melt-down and division everywhere, what other option is there? It’s such a shame that we haven’t been able to have a little more understanding and flexibility from our European friends and been able to work together more, because Britain needs to be brought back together – sharpish – by whatever means. Not least to restore our faith in Politics and Democracy as a whole…!

It’s not the right time for David Cameron to ‘pop back up’.  (Especially as he is trying to sell a book.) Boris Johnson must be allowed to lead.
