Spring Summer 2014
Deokhye
For Spring Summer 14 Eudon Choi’s inspiration is drawn from the tragic and largely forgotten story of Princess Deokhye, the last Princess of the Korean Joseon Dynasty. At times, life can be more dramatic than any kind of fictional portrayal and at times, a person’s entire life can be more unusual than any theatrical presentation. Princess Deokhye’s life was like that.Born the youngest and only daughter of King Gojong in 1912, she lived through the painful years of the annexation of Korea by Japan. She was sent to be educated in Japan and forced into a political marriage with a Japanese nobleman, living 38 years of her life in exile, only returning in 1962. The lush botanical prints in Eudon Choi’s collection echo her pain as the flowers seem to morph and melt into print separates including jackets, skirts and coats. But there is a definite call to nature with this collection, which is enchanted by Eudon Choi’s focus on the exotic floral of Asia. With a myriad of delicate hues  Eudon Choi creates a kaleidoscope of gentle femininity tempered with the structure and masculinity for which Eudon Choi has become so well known.Elsewhere, 2D becomes 3D via a series of Asian pyjama inspired separates and fine knits; their original flat shapes manipulated in to their final multi-faceted forms, often introducing Choi’s signature blending of fabrics. This theme is also evident in a series of sky blue cotton pieces, leathers and other more structured pieces.Soft tailoring is evident, with delicately structured shorts in a cherry blossom pink paired with a dip hem tee with dolman sleeve, whilst a stunning navy corset lifts at the hip to accentuate the female form; this is then balanced effortlessly by billowing cropped trousers with an intricately embroidered hem.The botanical theme resumes with a Guipure Lace contrasting against black and continues with handbags, laden with sequins, which have been delicately intertwined into abstract floral shapes. These are coupled with beautiful wooden headpieces by Piers Atkinson and platform wooden sandals by Joanne Stoker.Ultimately with this collection Eudon Choi takes another effortless step into the future with a London Fashion Week catwalk debut and a design signature that is prominent and growing more prevalent by the day. His stealthy cuts and application of masculine tailoring continue to make him an asset to the London fashion scene and beyond.
